How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Car in Ushuaia? Travel and Price Guide
Ushuaia is a wonderful destination in any season. Situated at the southern end of Argentina, the island of Tierra del Fuego offers mountains, lakes, hiking, outdoor activities and snowy landscapes that attract visitors for skiing and other winter sports.
With so many attractions, the first question is often how to get around. Guided excursions provide commentary about the places you visit, while renting a car gives you more independence and control over your itinerary. This guide was originally published in February 2024, when its central question was: how much does a rental car cost in Ushuaia?
Prices have changed since then. The historical figures included here are for reference only and should not be considered current rental quotes.
Perhaps you are traveling with children, prefer to return to your accommodation when you choose or simply want to visit places on your own schedule. Renting a vehicle may be a practical solution. Public transportation does not reach every attraction, so plan how to get to national parks, museums, restaurants and other places you want to visit. What Budget Should You Allow for a Rental Car?
Rental prices depend on several factors. A roomy vehicle with extra features costs more than a compact, basic model, while a motorhome can combine transportation and accommodation. Each type of vehicle provides different levels of comfort and flexibility.

Having your own car can make it easier to stop at viewpoints, travel with luggage and adjust your schedule. The original 2024 guide provided these approximate daily rental examples:
- Economy car: approximately ARS 40,000 per day, for a vehicle that might carry four or five people, with pickup in Ushuaia or at the airport.
- Larger car or SUV: about ARS 10,000–15,000 more per day than a basic car, depending on model, capacity and comfort. The article mentioned the Jeep Renegade as one example.
- Premium SUV: the article described the Jeep Commander at approximately ARS 80,000 per day in the 2024 market.
All amounts above are from 2024 and should not be used as a price list today. Request an updated quote that identifies the rental period, insurance, mileage allowance, deposit, fuel policy and winter equipment where required.
What About Renting a Motorhome?
For a different adventure, consider a motorhome. It brings together mobility and a place to sleep, with equipment that may include a bathroom, cooking area, kitchen utensils, hot water, heating, beds and storage space. Depending on the rental, additional items such as sleeping bags, tents, tables or chairs might also be available.
The original article mentioned Cruz del Sur as a campervan option and estimated rental rates of around USD 150–200 per day in 2024. Unlike a conventional car, a properly equipped motorhome may reduce your need for separate accommodation, although operating costs and camping permissions still need to be considered.

Rental conditions vary by provider and vehicle. The original guide referred to a valid category B1 driver’s license, a minimum driver age of 25 years and a four-day minimum booking for certain motorhomes. These should be understood as conditions described in the 2024 article, not universal or verified current requirements. Confirm the license class, age limits, insurance rules and any border-crossing authorization with your rental company before booking.
Accommodation choices in Ushuaia also vary: you can stay downtown, close to shops, restaurants and services, or farther out near natural areas. Your location, travel group and preferred activities will influence whether a compact car, SUV or motorhome makes the most sense.
Places to Visit by Rental Car in Ushuaia
Having a vehicle gives you room for your luggage and the freedom to stop for photographs or rest when needed. Here are some of the destinations featured in the original driving guide.
Tierra del Fuego National Park
The park is approximately 11 kilometers from central Ushuaia, reached via National Route 3, with driving time depending on traffic, weather and the specific entrance. It offers native flora and fauna, paths of different difficulty levels and activities that may include kayaking or canoeing, as well as the historic End of the World Train.
The original guide reported park hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in 2024 and mentioned parking areas near the park entrance, Río Pipo, Ensenada Zaratiegui, Alakush Visitor Center, Lago Acigami and Bahía Lapataia. Operating hours, parking permissions and road access must be checked again, particularly in winter when snow or ice can affect conditions.

Lago Escondido and Lago Fagnano
The Fuegian lakes are another remarkable road trip destination. Travelers cross the Fuegian Andes and reach Paso Garibaldi viewpoint, a favorite place for memorable panoramic photographs.
Along the immense Lago Fagnano, also known as Lago Kami, the original guide recommended the area around Estancia La Carmen. It described outdoor activities, sports, lake views from a white pier and a small family history museum connected with the historic ranch buildings. Confirm the estate’s current visitor services before making plans.

Puerto Almanza
To reach Puerto Almanza by road, travelers generally head north from Ushuaia along National Route 3 before following Provincial Routes J and K, subject to current road signage and access. This fishing village is a great place to enjoy seafood from the Beagle Channel, including regional dishes made with fresh shellfish.
You can take a leisurely stroll through the area, appreciate the coastal scenery and enjoy a meal. If you prefer not to drive, transfers and organized excursions may also be available, making it possible to discover Puerto Almanza and nearby attractions with a guide.
Is Renting a Car the Right Choice for Your Trip?
Having your own vehicle offers freedom, but it is not the best option for everyone. Compare the overall cost of renting with guided excursions and transfers, consider the number of people traveling, their mobility needs and how much time you have. A vehicle is especially useful if you want to create your own schedule, but driving in winter requires preparation and attention to road conditions.
