Krund: an Antarctic-inspired bar in Ushuaia
Krund Ushuaia presents itself as the first Antarctic-themed bar in Ushuaia, a refuge for friends surrounded by Tierra del Fuego’s sea and mountains. The original listing describes a bar and restaurant with live music.
Who was Ernesto Krund?
The venue’s published history tells the story of Ernesto Krund, born in Zwickau, Germany, on 31 December 1883. He arrived in Argentina in 1907 and died in Ushuaia on 13 May 1960.
According to the original historical narrative, Krund worked as a local guide and pathfinder (baqueano), joined the police and assisted with mail services between the area known as Lake Khami (Lake Fagnano) and Ushuaia.
A pioneer in the Fuegian valleys
The original text records that on 14 February 1938, Ernesto Krund entered the territorial police as a guide. Before that, he had worked as a fox hunter and a guide through the difficult landscapes of Tierra del Fuego.
He had a cabin and dogs in the Las Cotorras area. When he began his police service, the cabin became the Las Cotorras police outpost.
The publication credits him as one of the people who opened the way for mail delivery towards Lake Fagnano. In summer, he travelled on horseback; in winter, when the valley was covered with snow, the story says he fashioned rudimentary skis from lenga wood to complete his journeys. The bar’s original history calls him the first skier in Tierra del Fuego.
This historical narrative is reproduced from Krund’s published description and is not an independent biographical verification.
