Ushuaia Maritime and Prison Museum: explore the former End of the World prison

The former Ushuaia prison, closed as a correctional facility in 1947, is now a National Historic Monument and one of the city’s most significant cultural attractions. Its historic prison wings hold museums dedicated to local history, maritime exploration, Antarctica and art.

What can you see?

The Prison Museum tells the stories of inmates, prison life and the development of Ushuaia through its old cells. The Maritime Museum uses ship models and historical material to explore Tierra del Fuego’s maritime past. The Antarctic Museum focuses on expeditions and explorers such as Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton and Nordenskjöld. The Marine Art Museum features works by Argentine marine artists, alongside temporary exhibitions.

Planning your visit

The museum is at Yaganes and Gobernador Paz, Ushuaia. Entry is purchased at the museum; the operator’s visitor information states that tickets are not sold online and that reservations are not required. Audio guides are available in several languages. Confirm the current schedule, admission rates and availability of guided tours on the official Maritime Museum website before visiting.
