It is among the best-known landmarks of Tierra del Fuego and a favourite subject for photographs taken on sightseeing cruises.

It is often described as the “Lighthouse at the End of the World”. But is it really the lighthouse that inspired that famous name? There are actually two distinct landmarks, each with its own history.

The history of Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse

Les Eclaireurs was inaugurated on 23 December 1920 on a rocky islet in the channel, approximately 17 kilometres east of Ushuaia. The original guide describes a structure about 11 metres tall, built to help vessels navigate the difficult waters and rocky islands of the area.

The lighthouse is automated and, according to the historical description in the Spanish article, displays a flashing white light. Maritime signal characteristics and operating details can change, so they should not be relied on for navigation without current official charts and notices.

The name Les Eclaireurs comes from the group of islets associated with the late-nineteenth-century explorations and mapping of the area. In addition to its maritime role, the distinctive lighthouse has become one of the symbols of tourism in Ushuaia.

Why is it confused with the Lighthouse at the End of the World?

The historical Lighthouse at the End of the World is San Juan de Salvamento Lighthouse, on Isla de los Estados, east of Tierra del Fuego. It dates back to 1884 and is connected with the title of Jules Verne’s novel The Lighthouse at the End of the World, published after the author’s death in 1905.

The original Spanish article explains that San Juan de Salvamento ceased operating in 1902, when the Año Nuevo Lighthouse replaced it, and that the older structure was later reconstructed as a historical landmark. Its remote location and literary associations are quite different from the comparatively accessible Les Eclaireurs islet.

The two sites are not interchangeable: the lighthouse most visitors photograph on a regular Beagle Channel cruise is Les Eclaireurs, not San Juan de Salvamento.

Two different icons of Tierra del Fuego

Although popular usage has connected the two names, both lighthouses deserve to be recognised in their own right. Les Eclaireurs is a living symbol of Ushuaia’s waterfront and its maritime scenery. San Juan de Salvamento is part of the region’s early navigation history and Argentina’s literary heritage.

For travellers, understanding that difference enriches the experience of sailing through the Beagle Channel. It is also a reminder of how important these lights were to crews working in remote, changeable southern waters.

How can you see Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse?

The most common way to view Les Eclaireurs is on a guided boat tour from Ushuaia’s tourist pier. Different navigations pass sea lion islands and seabird colonies, including areas associated with Isla de los Lobos and Isla de los Pájaros, before approaching the lighthouse to take photographs from the boat.

You do not normally go inside or land on the lighthouse islet. The experience is to observe it from the water, at a distance determined by maritime conditions and the operator. A chance sighting of dolphins or whales cannot be guaranteed.

Compare the classic Beagle Channel navigation and read our Ushuaia tourist pier guide for information on where many cruises depart.

What about San Juan de Salvamento?

The restored San Juan de Salvamento Lighthouse occupies a much more remote location on Isla de los Estados. The original article highlights its role in preserving the history of explorers and navigators at the southern edge of the continent. It is not part of the standard tourist cruises from Ushuaia, so travellers should never assume a typical Les Eclaireurs tour reaches it.

Both lights tell different parts of the same story: the maritime history, isolation and remarkable geography of southern Patagonia.

Plan your lighthouse and wildlife excursion

Even during the summer, wear warm layers and a windproof jacket. Check the route, departure time and weather policy in the operator’s description. A classic navigation lets you experience the channel’s mountains, seabirds and sea lions while seeing Ushuaia’s most photographed lighthouse.

Browse other published excursions in Ushuaia for alternative routes, including longer seasonal penguin-watching cruises.

Discover Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse on the Beagle Channel, its history and the difference from the historic San Juan de Salvamento Lighthouse.

[338

post-81107","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fuegian-history
["GET
