This building is one of the greatest exponents of local architectural heritage. Declared Cultural Heritage of the City of Ushuaia by Resolution of the Deliberative Council (09/10/96). Innumerable social events of significance for the population of Ushuaia took place in this place. It belonged to Tomás Bebán (son of an immigrant of Croatian origin), who when he decided to get married ordered the panels for his future house from Sweden. They brought the house disassembled and installed it between 1911 and 1913.
It was used as a family residence until Tomás’ death in 1963 (he had married Paula Amanda Arias and they had eight children). Later, a clinic and the Las Goletas hotel operated. Later, the family’s descendants sold it.
Due to the deterioration it showed, the Municipality of Ushuaia decided to recover the building and move it from the place where it was built (on Av. Maipú 857) to its current location on the Paseo de los Antiguos Pobladores. Later, two other old buildings in the same sector – the Pena and Torres houses – were moved, according to a “Old Town” project of the Municipality of Ushuaia, to rescue the historical-architectural heritage of the city.
On November 4, 1994, the Beban house was inaugurated as a Cultural and Exhibition Center.
